I’ve been asked about how to convert PDF files of scanned artwork into JPGs that can be edited or used on social media, one simple way to do this would be to use image editing software such as GIMP, The GNU Image Manipulation Program, this is often described as a free alternative to Adobe Photoshop.

First of all if you don’t already have it you’ll need to install GIMP,  you can download GIMP for Windows, Mac and Linux from their website gimp.org. Once installed follow the instructions below.

1. Open Gimp, and from the main menu choose File and Open.

 3. Navigate to where you file is located, select it and click [Open].

4. In the Import from PDF window just click the [Import] button.

5. Now that you have your image open in GIMP you have lots of option available to manipulate it, however we’ll visit that another time.

6. From the main menu again, select File and Export As…

7. Choose where you would like to save your file, give it a name, and select JPEG image (*.jpg, (.jpeg, *.jpe) from the drop down menu of available file types. Then click [Export].

8. In the options window increase the Quality to maximum to ensure the best image quality then click [Export] again.

9. You now have JPG image as well as the original PDF file.
